What does it take to make a sustainable food system? Well, it means agreeing on some basic definitions. Let's start with the premise that in order to be sustainable, it has to be doable over a long period of time and ideally be a regenerative cycle; and to be a system, it has to be integrated. That means that rather than being linear with a beginning or end, a sustainable system must be arc-welded and fused. The fusing lynchpin for a sustainable food system is composting -- we compost to complete a food's life cycle, and we begin the life cycle in the soil as well.
